January 8 – Immigration as a Moral Issue – Bo will focus his remarks on immigration as a moral issue and share some lessons learned in Mexico and the Arizona desert. He will also talk about the upcoming battle looming in the republican controlled state legislature where there is an attempt to adopt an Alabama styled immigration law. Bo Glenn is a retired Durham attorney turned community organizer focusing on homelessness and public transportation. He is a Co-chair of the Social Justice Committee at ERUUF working on issues for immigrant farm workers. Bo spent two weeks working with No Mas Muertes in Arizona working with immigrants crossing the US/Mexican border and in Mexico assisting deported immigrants. This summer at ERUUF, he co-lead a Life Span religious education program on immigration as a moral issue. Presented by: Bo Glenn January 15 – Confessions of a “Wicked Son” – “The Torah speaks of four sons,” says the liturgy for Passover Seder. “One is wise, one wicked, one simple, and one does not know how to ask.” As an academic scholar of religion, David Halperin spent his professional life asking the “wicked son’s” questions. How “wicked” were they, really? Dr. Halperin, novelist and professor emeritus of religious studies at UNC-CH, reflects on the virtue ― or is it a vice? ― of intellectual detachment where faith is concerned. Presented by: David Halperin January 22 – Working with Muslim and Christian Communities in Australia and Indonesia– Jessica’s area of expertise is multicultural interfaith dialogue, especially between and within Muslim and Christian communities. During undergraduate studies at the Australian National University, Australia, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Indonesia, and subsequent work in Indonesia, Jessica developed an appreciation for the complexities and implications associated with interfaith conflict and peace, and in 2008 initiated work on an annual international program, Uniting through Faith, to facilitate relationship development and mutual education between Christians and Muslims in Indonesia and Australia. (from Jessica’s website). Jessica will be introduced by Diana Phillips, member of the same Peace Corps. Presented by: Jessica Butcher January 29 – Choosing to Bless the World Presented by: Patty Hanneman February 5 – Reflections on Spiritual Practice – There are many types of spiritual practice, but all have the purpose of helping us pay closer attention to the blessings we receive during our day-to-day lives. We will consider what we mean by "spiritual practice." This service will follow our first Sunday brunch.
